Marwin Hitz missed the last two games due to hip problems. The FCB regular goalkeeper reported back in Lucerne – and how. The 36-year-old veteran held on for victory in a game in which his team was clearly inferior.

In the first half, the proportion of the game was not so clearly on Lucerne’s side. Nevertheless, Hitz had to prevent the deficit for the first time in the 31st minute. He fished Max Meyer’s low shot out of the corner. But especially after the break, Basel needed strong support and a bit of luck during Lucerne’s Sturm und Drang phase:

  • 46th minute: Just a few seconds after the restart, Severin Ottiger tried an inside-foot lob, but the ball bounced off the outside post.
  • 47th minute: Sofyan Chader plays a one-two with Meyer and hits a hook. His shot is brilliantly neutralized by Hitz.
  • 52nd minute: Denis Simani gets a header in the penalty area, but Hitz is back at his post.

Dubasin turns events on their head

Basel, who had hardly been able to worry FCL goalie Pascal Loretz before, then struck ice-cold in the 66th minute. After a one-two with Djordje Jovanovic, Jonathan Dubasin kept his nerve in front of the goal and made it 1-0.

With anger in their stomachs, Lucerne threw everything forward and caused “Rotblau” to lurch once again. But Teddy Okou was unlucky with his shot in the 83rd minute: the ball hit the bottom edge of the crossbar – even Hitz couldn’t have done anything against this shot.

Despite 10 injured and 2 suspended players, the weakened “Bebbi” subsequently managed a narrow victory. Although Fabio Celestini’s team wintered in second-to-last place, the gap to the line is now “only” 7 points. Lucerne had to be defeated in front of their home crowd for only the second time this season (1:4 against Zurich on October 1st).

This is how it continues

Basel will travel to FC Zurich first after the winter break on January 21st. Lucerne will also resume play away against Yverdon on the same day.
