  • The Swiss U21 national team missed the leap to the top of the European Championship qualifying group 5.
  • So Switzerland is de facto in the barrage, in which they can still fight for the EM ticket.

In retrospect, it was the fatal scenes from the Swiss U21 perspective in the final European Championship qualifier against Moldova: the Nati quickly worked their way up the field with a simple pass, but Filip Stojilkovic missed miserably after Fabian Rieder’s exemplary pass. A few seconds later it was 1:1 instead of 2:0 for Switzerland – visibly irritated by the missed chance, the Swiss defense allowed Wladislaw Blanuta to get a free header.

Instead of being able to keep eyeing the group win and thus direct qualification for the 2023 European Championships in Romania and Georgia, Switzerland (23 points) will probably have to go into the barrage; before the final group game, the Dutch already have the same number of points and a significantly better goal difference.
