1: 1 in the Super League – thanks to Ardaiz: Winterthur fights for a point in Geneva – sport

  • Geneva has to settle for a 1-1 draw against Winterthur in the 22nd round of the Super League.
  • Joaquin Ardaiz brought the Eulachstadt team an important point thanks to his equalizer in the 52nd minute.
  • In the other Sunday games, Lucerne celebrates a narrow 1-0 win over GC, Lugano does not get more than 2-2 against Basel after a 2-0 lead.

The guests from Winterthur came out of the dressing room with a lot of focus. Bruno Berner’s team wanted to equalize as quickly as possible. In the 52nd minute the time had come: With 3 quick passes, the Eulachstadt team overturned the entire Geneva defense. Thibault Corbaz sent striker Joaquin Ardaiz through the ball into the box, where the Uruguayan made no mistake and netted to make it 1-1.

The Winterthur equalizer gave the game new impetus. Opportunities piled up on both sides:

  • 62 minutes: Servette’s Chris Bedia gets the ball after a corner via detours in the six-yard box. With his back to the goal, he pushes the play equipment with a hoe but just past the left post.
  • 65 minutes: After a corner kick from Winterthur, Remo Arnold is free to head the ball. However, he fails at the post.
  • 68 minutes: Looking for a gap in the guests’ defensive block, the Genevans let the ball run around the opponent’s penalty area. Finally, Yoan Severin sees an opening. However, FCW goalie Kuster holds on to his degree.

The final phase had begun. Both fan blocks whipped their teams forward and hoped for the lucky punch. Servette in particular would have deserved it in the final minutes. Bravely defending Winterthur, however, did not concede another goal.

Staubli annuls the penalty kick

After just over four minutes, the game in Geneva experienced its first excitement. Miroslav Stevanovic saw his cross blocked from the right by Souleymane Diaby’s arm in the penalty area. Referee Esther Staubli pointed to the point.

Before the penalty could be taken, however, she was called to the screen by VAR Fedayi San. There she saw that Diaby’s right arm was leaning close to her body and therefore took the penalty back.

Geneva opening goal just before the break

The scene in the Winterthur penalty area was to remain the emotional highlight for a long time in a half in which both teams were willing but too inconsistent in the game going forward. But then, in the 42nd minute, Geneva worked their way back into the opponent’s sixteen.

Bedia stuck a short pass to the left for Severin, who put his colors in front with a precise low shot into the far corner and scored his first Super League goal. The numerous guests present in the penalty area already seemed to be having tea at break.

Servette still undefeated at home

Due to the narrow, but ultimately fair point sharing with the Eulachstadt-based team, the Geneva team remained undefeated in their 11th home game of the current season. On the other hand, after 7 consecutive defeats against Geneva, Winterthur was once again happy to get a point. This puts Bruno Berner’s team level with Sion in the table.

This is how it goes

For Servette, the cup quarter-finals in Rotkreuz are on Thursday (from 8:10 p.m. live on SRF). Winterthur, who have already been eliminated in this competition, welcomes Super League leader YB to the Schützenwiese on Saturday.
