The popular gangster series Peaky Blinders has come to an end on Netflix. While there are big plans for the future, actor Cillian Murphy reflects on his last 10 years as Tommy Shelby.
- You can watch the final season of Peaky Blinders on Netflix. In an interview, actor Cillian Murphy now talks about his time on the set and in the role of Tommy Shelby.
- The gangster series comes to an end with its 6th season, but series creator Steven Knight already has big plans and announces a movie and several spin-offs.
In September 2013, an episode of the British drama series aired for the first time. After six seasons and a total of 36 episodes, the story of the Shelby family and their gang of gangsters in Birmingham (for the time being) has come to an end. The final 6 episodes of “Peaky Blinders” are now available for streaming on Netflix.
After the end of the series, an era has passed, especially for the leading actor Cillian Murphy, who played the role of Tommy Shelby for 10 years on the set of the BBC One series. In an interview with the online magazine Entertainment Weekly, the actor spoke about how he felt during his character’s time as the leader of the Shelby crime family.
Since filming began on Peaky Blinders in 2012, the actor has spent a total of 10 years of his life returning to the set of the series and, in turn, to his role. 10 years is of course a very long time and so the last episode was also a “big chapter [seines] life” closed.
What Murphy particularly appreciated about the role was the chance to grow with a character over a long period of time for the first time and also “to get older”. It was precisely because of this that he was able to experience for the first time that “the character himself takes over the steering wheel” because as an actor he was completely immersed in his role and the performance.
However, the actor also admitted that playing Tommy Shelby often involved hard work for him. For example, it always took a little while before he found his way back to Tommy’s unmistakable Birmingham accent at the start of a season. However, he is more than grateful for this unique opportunity that he was allowed to accompany a character through “Peaky Blinders” for so long.
Of course, many fans are now saddened that season 6 is the final season of the show about Tommy Shelby and his gang. But series creator Steven Knight has announced great news: In addition to the planned feature film, there will also be other spin-offs. So if everything goes according to plan, you might not have to say goodbye to the Peaky Blinders entirely just yet.
