1000 Euro backpack – Now even cyclists get an airbag!

Airbags, which inflate in the event of a fall and can protect the driver from serious injuries, have long been established on the racetrack for motorcycles. They are also slowly catching on on the road. Now even the first airbag for non-motorized two-wheelers is coming onto the market!

It was actually a question of time, after the number of serious injuries among cyclists had risen sharply with e-bikes. Sports backpack and protector manufacturer Evoc will be launching the Commute AIR Pro 18, the world’s first airbag backpack for cyclists, in autumn. In addition to practical storage space, the compact transport bag also offers fall detection sensors. If this registers a critical situation, a reusable airbag is filled within 0.2 seconds with a gas cartridge, which protects the neck, shoulders, collarbones and chest area. A back protector integrated in the backpack also offers protection for the spine. The biker is responsible for putting on a helmet, which is not integrated. In order for the airbag technology to work, the backpack wearer has to close a magnetic Fidlock buckle on the chest after shouldering. Only then is the security technology activated. The battery-operated and USB-rechargeable sensors then constantly check the position of the backpack. If a fall is imminent, the airbag is deployed. If this has been deployed, the airbag can be reused provided it is not damaged. Only the inflator needs to be replaced. In addition to its protective technology, the Commute AIR Pro 18, which is made from recycled polyester, offers many organizational compartments and a special laptop slot. At a price of 990 euros, the need for security must be quite high.
