1000 km range – Daimler promises “the most economical electric car in the world”

Daimler is planning electric cars with a record range and comparatively little energy consumption. To this end, the Stuttgart-based company presented a prototype of the “most efficient Mercedes-Benz of all time” at a digital world premiere on the occasion of the world’s largest technology trade fair CES in the USA.

According to digital simulation, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX can cover more than 1000 kilometers with one battery charge, and that with a battery that fits in a small car, explained CEO Ola Källenius. The aim is to build the most efficient electric car in the world. When series models from the Mercedes electric brand EQ would follow remained open. But head of research Markus Schäfer emphasized that it depends on the combination of range and low energy consumption: “We will be the first to be able to show that.” , has also made the Chinese competitor Nio for its ET7. Tesla buried the long-haul plan for the Model S Plaid last year. Daimler wanted to put the streamlined limousine on stage at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which began on Wednesday. But like other large exhibitors, the Stuttgart-based company canceled participation in the trade fair at short notice due to the aggravated situation in the corona pandemic. In a few months, the range will be tested in real life on the road, said Schäfer. Not only new battery technology brings range According to the current state of electrical drive technology, a long range for e-cars can only be achieved with large, heavy batteries. The e-cars, which weigh tons, consume a lot of electricity, which climate protectionists criticize. Mercedes promises a solution for this. The vehicle sets standards for energy efficiency through improved battery technology, the use of lightweight construction material, tires with low rolling resistance and thanks to the aerodynamic shape of the car (cW 0.17), which is achieved, for example, through silicon carbide in the battery chemistry and temperature management in the drive. With around 100 kWh of usable capacity, the battery is almost as powerful as the EQS luxury electric sedan, but only half the size and 30 percent lighter. The voltage is 900 volts. Solar modules in the roof contributed a range of 25 kilometers per day under ideal conditions. The EQXX consumes less than ten kilowatt hours over 100 kilometers. Current e-cars need up to twice as much electricity as an ADAC analysis shows. Converted into fossil fuel consumption, this would be around one liter per 100 kilometers, explained Daimler. The Vision EQXX is powered by a 150 kW / 204 PS electric motor. The vehicle weighs 1750 kg when empty. “With the Vision EQXX, the best minds from our research and development centers worked together with engineers from our Formula 1 and Formula E teams. They prove that innovations from motorsport – where the drivetrains are already highly electrified – are of direct relevance to the development of road vehicles, “says Schäfer. Daimler also wants to become more environmentally friendly . When it comes to interior design, Mercedes is experimenting with recycled plastics and sustainable, vegan materials. Upholstery fabrics made from cacti, mushrooms or bamboo replace leather made from animal hide or carpets made from synthetic fibers. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the infotainment system should better follow commands from the person behind the wheel.
