No, not all 1080p are created equal. On Reddit, a user shared a screenshot showing the quality options available for a video. Above 1080p, we see the mention “1080p Premium”, which benefits from an improved bitrate.

YouTube would therefore be preparing a new display in 1080p, reserved for subscribers of its premium offer. It’s true that 1080p has always been a bad thing on YouTube. We can therefore (finally) expect an increase in quality in this definition, at least in return for the payment of 11.99 euros per month, the cost of YouTube Premium.
YouTube uses a particularly strong compression for the diffusion of its contents in 1080p, which explains this degradation of the quality. By increasing the bitrate for its premium subscribers, the platform offers them a better experience… and gives itself an additional argument to push towards subscription.

On mobile devices, YouTube offers to change the quality of a video between Automatic (the recommended option and activated by default), High quality and Data saver. You must select the advanced parameters to define the precise quality targeted (720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K, etc.). It’s not yet known if 1080p Premium will be enabled by default for YouTube Premium subscribers or if they’ll have to take a look at the display options to enable it.
