1&1 prepares the start of the 5G network

In the future, there will be not just three, but four major network providers in the mobile communications sector in Germany. After Deutsche Telekom already has its own networks in addition to Vodafone and Telefónica (o2), a fourth provider will soon be added in the form of 1&1. The United Internet brand has now announced that in July a first 5G test successfully completed could become. In the “Friendly User Test”, “real customer behavior” was tested under real conditions.

According to 1&1, transmission speeds of over 1 gigabit per second be achieved. According to the company, data transfers of around 8 terabytes per customer within 24 hours have also been successfully tested. Latency times of just 3 milliseconds were observed under optimal conditions (source: 1&1 at LinkedIn).

Just like the competition, 1&1 would like to initially focus on urban areas when setting up the mobile network. The first antennas and data centers are already in place, but customers will not be allowed into the new network until next summer. 5G antennas are planned in 390 cities. A partnership with Telefónica is also intended to enable national roaming in order to be able to offer customers better reception.

1&1 enters: Falling prices as a result?

United Internet has not yet explained which offers 1&1 would like to use to inspire new customers for its own network. What is certain, however, is that Competition stimulates business. If the tariffs from 1&1 are more attractive than those from other network operators, then Telekom & Co. could in turn tempt with cheaper offers.
