If there is only one candidate, you can only vote yes or no. Proportional system determines the number of mandates. In the election for local council, the result of the election Sunday counts. Depending on the strength of a list, the mandataries are determined according to the proportional system. The governing members of the community board or city council also arise from this system. This means that there are no government negotiations like after the state elections, because parties with the highest number of votes automatically get a co-governing position. Nine to 40 representatives in the municipalities The complex distribution through the proportional system is calculated using the d’Hondt method using computers. The size of the municipal councils depends on the population of the municipality. There are local councils in the state ranging from nine to 25 mandates. In the city there are 40. Preferential votes can help candidates. The mandates are awarded within the parties in descending order of list positions. In addition to the Kreuzerl for the party, a preferential vote can also be awarded for a candidate from the chosen party. If a person receives a third of the party votes as preferential votes, they are automatically moved up to the top of the list. Results only after the official polling closeThe votes are only counted in the polling stations after the polling stations close, as are voting cards that have already been received. The first results from smaller communities are expected in the early afternoon. The preliminary result in the city of Salzburg should be known around 6 p.m. (without voting cards).
