120 beats per minute: is the film autobiographical?

The film 120 beats per minute by Robin Campillo is broadcast this Wednesday, May 18 on Arte. The film was awarded at Cannes and at the Césars.

Arte supports the holding of the Cannes Film Festival 2022 by broadcasting this Wednesday, May 18 the film 120 beats per minute by Robin Campillo, Grand Prix of the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 and winner of six César in 2018. For the occasion, Télé Star invites you to find out more about this masterpiece of French cinema and in particular to find out if this film is autobiographical.

The story of the film begins in 1992 when Nathan, played by Arnaud Valois, joined Act Up, an association that fights against the spread of AIDS. Robin Campillo, director of the film, was also an activist in this association, but he assures us: 120 beats per minute is not an autobiography. “I tried to reconstruct quite a few debates and actions that had taken place then, I arranged them freely in relation to historical truth. We can recognize here and there different character traits of personalities who marked the history of the group. To build the characters, the inspiration came less from this or that real person than from the tensions that opposed them”explained the director at the release of his film.

An award at Cannes, six Césars and an Oscar nomination

With nearly a million cinema admissions in France, 120 beats per minute is one of the big hits of 2017 in cinema. But, more than popular, the success was above all on the side of the professionals. Chosen for the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix in 2017, Robin Campillo’s film won six Césars at the 2018 edition: Best Film, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Music, Best Supporting Actor for Antoine Reinartz and Best Male Newcomer for Nahuel Perez Biscayart. 120 beats per minute was also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
