A new feature in the software Google Meet now allows you to start a video conference on one device and finish it on another. Practical for nomadic teleworkers.

It’s a very simple addition, but one that had to be thought of. In a blog post published on April 24, 2024, Google announced the arrival of a “Switch here» on Google Meet. Concretely, the latter allows for example to start a videoconference on your smartphone and then switch it to your computer in one click.

An invisible transition according to Google

Previously, to switch from one device to another it was necessary to disconnect from the active session and reopen the Meet link on the second device. Not ideal for those who juggle multiple devices in their teleworking process. From now on, Google will offer by default to switch video conferencing to the last device on which you connected.

You can start a call on your phone, then once you arrive at your office, switch to your computer by simply going to the conversation link. Google swears that the switch will take place “maintaining the flow of the conversation and without fear of missing important information“. The mention the reference “call switched to another device» will then be displayed on the phone.

It will also be possible to join the conversation from the second device without cutting it off on the first, if you want to avoid any problems. An option to use your computer’s webcam while using your phone’s microphones is also present. Finally, the “Companion” mode which allows you to attend a video as a “spectator” is also still available.

Web, Android and iOS compatible

The tool for switching between different devices has already started to be deployed on Google pro and personal and should be available to everyone by May 15 at the latest. The iOS and Android mobile applications are announced as compatible with the new product.

With this welcome feature and the integration of a native webcam mode in Android 14, it is clear that Google wants to position its ecosystem as the cornerstone of your remote work sessions. In a world where teleworking has become widely democratized, any change that can make collaboration via the internet easier is a good idea.
