The password manager 1Pasword has announced the acquisition of Passage, a vendor of authentication solutions for developers. One more step towards the end of passwords and a step towards the generalization of passkeys.
If the password is an effective solution, it is far from flawless, which is also the case for double authentication. To go further, Apple unveiled Passkey, a new solution using biometrics via FaceID or TouchID to get rid of passwords. Password manager 1Password has announced its acquisition of Passage, a company offering a similar solution. We can expect this type of authentication to come to 1Password one day.

In a press release, 1Password announces the integration of the Passage team into that of the password manager, “to help accelerate passkey adoption for developers, enterprises and their customers“. The company therefore intends to merge the expertise of Passage with its organization and its reputation to play an important role in the sector.
Jeff Shiner, CEO of the company, says he is confident about the future of “Passkeyswhich he says are more secure than passwords while also being easier to use. With 1Password, he hears “deliver a seamless, secure, and interoperable passwordless experience faster“.
Passkeys are coming soon to 1Password
To achieve this, Jeff Shiner recalls that at the beginning of the year 1Password joined the FIDO Alliance, an industry association whose goal is to reduce dependence on passwords thanks to passkeys. It has also implemented a standard already used on macOS Ventura.
The company goes even further by stating that over the next few months it will “deploy a complete end-to-end solution for passwordless authentication, starting with full support for creating, saving, and using device-independent passkeys in 1Password“. A solution that should arrive during the first half of 2023.
