2-0 victory in Lucerne – FCZ continues to march unstoppably towards the title – Sport

  • FC Zürich celebrates a 2-0 away win against Lucerne in the 24th round of the Super League.
  • Assan Ceesay (17th) and Wilfried Gnonto (78th) provided the goals.
  • Thanks to the 11th win from the last 12 games, FCZ extend their lead in the table to 13 points.
  • In Wednesday’s first game, FC Sion clinched a narrow home win against Lausanne. YB surprisingly had to bow to Servette on Tuesday.

FC Zurich continues to draw lonely circles at the top of the Super League. Thanks to another victory, this time at the penultimate table in Lucerne, the city of Zurich distanced their opponents in the race for the championship title by no less than 13 points. It was the 11th win from the last 12 games for André Breitenreiter’s team. It’s been 16 games since Zurich last suffered a defeat.

Thanks to Tormaschine and Edeljoker

The Zurich team were dominant over the entire game distance. Last but not least, the goal completion statistics, which were 9:2 in favor of the guests, underscore this fact. So it seemed only a matter of time in the Swissporarena before the people of Zurich were allowed to celebrate for the first time.

  • 17 minutes: The FCZ attacks on the left side, making the passing game look playful. Blerim Dzemaili fakes a shot on the edge of the box, but passes it steeply to Assan Ceesay, who only has to push in.
  • 78 minutes: Once again, Zurich’s super joker Wilfried Gnonto comes off the bench – and scores. First he pulls out a corner kick, Ante Coric kicks it, Karol Mets extends and Gnonto is spot on at the left post. A co-production of FCZ-Joker.

Breitenreiter’s boys never seemed to be in danger of giving up the game. The harmony among the people of Zurich was palpable and at times impressive. The mechanisms engaged in the FCZ engine. It seems very unlikely that anything will go wrong in the championship race.

Lucerne too timid

For Lucerne, on the other hand, there was nothing to gain after a 0:4 and a 1:4 in the 3rd meeting of the season with FCZ. Only at the beginning and towards the end of the game did the hosts keep up with the leader and showed some enthusiasm and courage. Yannick Brecher spent an extremely peaceful evening in the FCZ goal – the Lucerne team didn’t manage a single goal until the final quarter of an hour on the Zurich box.

Lucerne’s goalie Marius Müller, for his part, had to intervene several times with a strong reaction. Exactly an hour later, his arm shot up after a Dzemaili finish. The home team’s goalkeeper kept hopes of a point alive. But it shouldn’t be.

So the slight upward trend with 7 points from the last 3 games gets a first damper. After today’s defeat, the Central Swiss remain on the Barrage pitch, 9 points behind the 8th-placed GC (1 game less).
