It’s the little sweetness of our summer, the one that makes our hearts beat more than ever and almost makes us want to relive our adolescence: Heartstopping is back on Netflix for a season 2, just as great as the previous one. This little cocoon of love and benevolence, very faithful to the original graphic novels of author Alice Oseman, still amazes us with its ability to offer magnificent and rare representations, all wrapped in a comforting lightness.
But these 8 new episodes go by at breakneck speed, and it can be difficult to temporarily say goodbye to Nick and Charlie, while waiting for season 3. To wait until then, two other series, available on SVOD platforms, are ideal to satisfy our need for realistic and addictive gay romances. Young Royals on Netflix, when The Crown encounter gossip girl
Heartstopping is a marvel of inclusion and unfailing love, that’s undeniable. But this “Care Bear” penchant for Alice Oseman’s creation can also sometimes annoy (on very rare occasions, we grant you). For these kinds of moments, we advise you to get closer to more dramatic series like Young Royals. As Prince Wilhelm enters a prestigious boarding school, the Hillerska Institute, he falls under the spell of Simon, one of his classmates.
Sort of a teen and gay version of The Crownthis Swedish series almost pushes us to pity the members of the royal families, as Wilhelm is torn between his duty linked to his status and his obvious desire for freedom. Young Royals does not escape many clichés of the genre, but it shines with its realistic representation of adolescents, far from the perfect bodies usually depicted on television. Don’t be fooled by its appearance cheap at first glance: this Netflix creation could well seduce you with its surprisingly deep and touching themes. Well, Simon and Wilhelm aren’t as dripping with cuteness as Nick and Charlie were.Heartstoppingbut that’s also their charm, after all.

Love, Victor on Disney+, when Heartstopping encounter Love, Simon
In 2018, long before Heartstoppingan essential film brought its great stone to the building of gay representations: Love, Simon, available on Disney+. Adapted from the novel by Becky Albertalli, this feature film starred Simon Spier, who hides his homosexuality from the eyes of others. But while another gay teenager reveals himself under the pseudonym of “Blue”, the two high school students will start a correspondence and forge strong bonds. With this cult story, Love, Simon made a milestone in the history of LGBTQIA+ stories by becoming the first film produced by a major cinema major and whose plot features two gay teenagers in the foreground. Two years later, a spin-off serial version was born with Love, Victor.
In this fun and refreshing romantic comedy, Victor arrives at Creekwood High School. As he tries to untangle the threads of his sexual orientation, he decides to contact Simon Spier, a former student of the establishment, who has gone through similar ordeals. In line with Love, Simon, this spin-off series offers a narrative that is a thousand miles from the stereotypes generally stuck on LGBTQIA + characters, and it does a lot of good. Gay love stories then become joyful and inspiring, far from the usual tragic destinies, without ever putting aside the difficulty of coming out in a very religious family environment, for example. In this sense, it is obviously close to HeartstoppingTo our delight.
