On Monday, two seniors in Innsbruck fell for this scam. All in all, the perpetrators were able to steal almost 200,000 euros.
Around noon, an 88-year-old woman from Innsbruck received a call on her landline phone, with the caller posing as a judge and saying that the elderly woman’s daughter had been involved in a serious traffic accident. “The woman was then asked to count all of her cash in the apartment and have it ready, as someone would come by in the afternoon and collect the money from her home. During the phone call, the 88-year-old was able to speak to a crying woman who was posing as her daughter,” the investigators describe. More than 50,000 euros gone. The pensioner subsequently complied with the caller’s request and handed over a five-digit euro amount in the late afternoon to an unknown man who picked up the money in front of her house. The damage amounts to more than 50,000 euros. “A little later, the 88-year-old received a call from her daughter, which revealed that she was not involved in an accident. The fraud was finally noticed and a complaint was filed with the police,” the investigators continued. Far more than 100,000 euros were taken from the safe. But that’s not all: In the afternoon, another senior woman in Innsbruck fell victim to unscrupulous fraudsters. Shortly after 3 p.m., the 77-year-old was called by an alleged police officer who made her believe that her daughter had caused a fatal traffic accident. An alleged lawyer then informed her that she could pay bail so that her daughter would not have to be held in custody. “Finally, the 77-year-old took a six-figure euro amount in cash from her safe and handed it over to a male person in a bag in Innsbruck.” , explains the “real” police. After the handover, the elderly woman was asked to go home again to get more money to sign. Then she can pick up her daughter,” the executive continued. Ultimately, this scam was also exposed. Damage in this case: over 130,000 euros.
