The semiconductor market saw exceptional growth in 2021 and all players benefited (except Intel).

The semiconductor industry is doing well. In this period of shortage, components are snapped up and demand has increased by 25.1% in 2021, according to figures published by the analysis firm Gartner.

Soaring prices

The semiconductor market weighed in at $583.5 billion in revenue last year, an all-time high. The result had so far never exceeded 500 billion dollars according to the report.

“As the global economy rebounded in 2021, shortages have emerged throughout the semiconductor supply chain, particularly in the automotive industry
commented Andrew Norwood, research vice president at Gartner.

“The combination of strong demand as well as rising logistics costs and raw material prices drove up the average selling price of semiconductors, contributing to overall revenue growth in 2021. “, adds the expert.

Samsung outperforms Intel

It is memory that remains the number 1 segment of the semiconductor industry. It generated $42.1 billion in additional revenue in 2021 compared to 2020 and accounts for 33.8% of industry growth. DRAM alone is responsible for $92.5 billion in revenue, driven by strong demand for computers and servers.

Thanks to growth of 31.6%, Samsung becomes number 1 in the market in 2021 with 13% market share, overtaking Intel (12.5% market share), which did not take advantage of the economic situation to progress with almost zero growth of 0.5%.

Their pursuers are far behind, but show very high growth rates. SK Hynix is on the third step of the podium (6.2% market share and +40.5% between 2020 and 2021), and follows Micron Technology (4.9% and +29.1%) then Qualcomm (4 .6% and +52.3%). Broadcom, MediaTek, Texas Instruments, NVIDIA and AMD complete the Top 10.
