The number of reports of unidentified flying objects has doubled in two years in Ulster.
In 2021, Northern Ireland has seen an increase in the number of UFO sightings, from 4 in 2019 to 6 in 2020 and finally to 8 for the year which is ending, reports the British press. But these are only cases reported to the police. Unlike France with Geipan, Northern Ireland has not set up any specialized service responsible for collecting these testimonies. And the fear of the ridiculous being always very present in this field, one can suppose that a large number of observations are not reported. Of the 8 cases recorded in 2021 for a population of just under 1.9 million inhabitants, the police did not conduct any investigation.

And we can deplore it because the eight cases reported this year are not lacking in interest. The premiere took place on January 17 with the report of a ‘spaceship’ accompanied by flashing lights at Downpatrick.
In early May, witnesses said they saw white lights following a helicopter in Maghaberry. A few days later, at the end of May, a “flying disc” was seen in the sky over County Antrim.

In July, in Newtownabbey, a surveillance camera recorded strange images of an unidentified aerial object and, also in July, a dome-shaped UFO equipped with eight lights was reported near Saintfield.
But it was after the summer that the most unusual cases of this successful year occurred: in Lisburn, a terrified witness reported “the presence of aliens in his room” and in October a man claimed to have been abducted by aliens.
The year of the UFOs in Northern Ireland ended on a more classic note with “unusual lights in the sky” seen in November.
Nick Pope, a former UFO specialist at the British Home Office, refuses to overinterpret this increase in the number of cases: “It is difficult to say what is behind this small upsurge. Containment may have played a role, with people having more time and availability to notice phenomena they normally wouldn’t have seen. It is also possible that the new interest of the US Congress in UAPs has made the population more receptive. ”
But Nick Pope believes that the actual number of sightings is undoubtedly much higher, regretting that the British government officially ended in 2009 its investigations into unidentified aerial phenomena. “I’m sure if the authorities encouraged people to report their sightings, their numbers would increase significantly.”
