21 million households will be impacted by a huge increase, are you concerned?

A new increase in the cost of electricity is announced for the year 2024, and the bill once again promises to be steep for many households and businesses in France. We reveal who will be most impacted.

News increases have just been announced for the year 2024. And not the least! Moreover, some of them are already causing discontent among households. The Minister of Transport Clément Beaune, who recently spoke about the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, assured on Wednesday November 20 that the increase in highway tolls would not exceed 3% on February 1 (RMC). As for the Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau, he confirmed that the packet of cigarettes would rise to 13 euros in the next two years, while the Confederation of tobacconists announced an increase of around 50 cents from January 1, 2024.

But that’s not all ! Another increase could have a broader impact on household budgets, that of energy cost and in particular of theelectricity. Recently, the Minister of the Economy recalled that France had put in place a tariff shield to control the energy crisis which began to emerge in 2021 and which accelerated over the following two years. Several revaluations had already increased the rating, even recently, and the next increase on February 1, 2024 could reach the 10%.

Some households less protected than others

This is what Bruno Le Maire suggested, and it has been confirmed since November 24 by the CEO of EDF Luc Rémont for whom hydroelectricity and nuclear power form “a combo allowing you to approach the coming weeks with confidence” (Franceinfo). Despite everything, the rise in the cost of electricity should be reflected in the bills of many French people. 21 million, we already estimate! All customers who have signed for an offer at the blue rate and the contract indexed by EDF.

As a general rule, these are households, condominiums and social housing, but also small municipalities. We also note that professionals and households who are connected to a meter displaying “a power less than or equal to 36 kVA” are likely to be most impacted by this increase (pleinvie.fr). Conversely, all customers who have signed a contract for a fixed price offer should not be affected by these future developments.

THE site of the government for ecological transition (ADEME) gives some tips for reducing your electricity consumption and, ultimately, reduce your bill. 20 solutions are proposed, including not leaving the light on unnecessarily, turning off standbys or using eco programs for the washing machine and dishwasher.
