LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters) – Some 250,000 people gathered in London for the remains of the late Queen Elizabeth II on display for more than four days in Westminster Hall, Britain’s culture secretary said on Tuesday.
“It’s roughly around 250,000. We’re working out the final number,” Michelle Donelan told The Times radio.
The royal coffin carrying the remains of the Queen, who died on September 8 at the age of 96, was transferred last Wednesday from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the seat of the British Parliament.
Thousands of people waited for hours in a queue stretching for miles in central London before they could pay their respects.
The body of the sovereign was transported Monday from Westminster to Windsor Castle, where he was buried, during a grandiose funeral attended by tens of thousands of people.
The last similar public display of a mortal remains in Britain was held in 1965 in honor of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill and drew 321,360 people to Westminster Hall, according to a House of Commons memo. municipalities.
