2nd round in the Swiss Cup – Lucerne beats Thun with ten men – Rapperswil-Jona eliminates Yverdon – Sport

  • FC Luzern beats Thun 3-1 after extra time in the second round of the Swiss Cup.
  • Rapperswil-Jona from the Promotion League throws Super League promoted Yverdon-Sport out of the Swiss Cup in the second round.
  • Lugano has no problems with Geneva’s second division club Lancy.

Thun (ChL) – Lucerne 1:3 aet

After the red card against FCL joker Dario Ulrich in the 79th minute when the score was 1:1, there was a lot to suggest that Thun could trip up the FCL in the cup, like last January. But the Bernese Oberlanders failed to capitalize on their numerical superiority. Instead, Lucerne flexed its muscles and brought about the decision in extra time with two great goals.

In the 99th minute, Teddy Okou found plenty of space on the right. The substitute offensive man took advantage of this coldly, moved into the penalty area and made it 2-1 with a shot through the legs of Thun captain Marco Bürki. Thun was no longer able to react to this setback. In the 112th minute, Ardon Jashari crowned his impressive solo run over 70 meters with the 3-1.

In regular time, Thun took the lead through Roland Ndongo (38th). Max Meyer equalized after the break. The German missed his penalty, but was then able to score in the margin.

Rapperswil-Jona (PL) – Yverdon-Sport 1-0

Rapperswil-Jona’s start to the third-tier Promotion League was a complete failure with only 6 points from as many games. This coup in the Swiss Cup against Yverdon, which had acclimatized well to the Super League after promotion, is all the more surprising. A former Super League player was responsible for the only goal of the game in Grünfeld. André Ribeiro successfully completed a counterattack in the 65th minute to make it 1-0.

Yverdon pushed for the equalizer with his back against the wall, but was denied time after time by FCRJ goalkeeper Niklas Steffen. After 93 minutes the surprise was complete. After GC, Yverdon is the second Super League team to get stuck early in the cup.

Lancy (2nd international league) – Lugano 0:3

Lugano did better than Yverdon. The Ticino team won 3-0 at Lancy from the 2nd interregional league. The Geneva outsiders were able to keep the game open for a long time. Only in the final phase did Zan Celar make it 2-0 with his second goal in favor of the 2022 Cup winner and last season’s Cup finalist. Mattia Bottani scored the final point in stoppage time.
