3 Body Problem: Exclusive Interview – is VR the future? That’s what the Netflix stars think

• The new Netflix series “3 Body Problem” tells of an alien invasion. To imagine themselves on earth, they use VR technology.
• Two characters in particular, Jack (John Bradley) and Jin (Jess Hong), dive into the world of aliens through VR glasses.
• We exclusively interviewed the Netflix stars and spoke to them about the dangers and possibilities of a VR future.

In the new Netflix series “3 Body Problem” Jess Hong, John Bradley and Alex Sharp play a trio of friends who find themselves in the middle of a series of strange murders. To make matters worse, they find a strangely modern pair of VR glasses that at least Hong and Bradley’s characters become addicted to.

We were able to exclusively interview the stars of the new sci-fi series and spoke to them about the dangers and possibilities of VR: “We’re already so reliant on our smartphones – and they’re outside of our bodies – but a VR headset could become glasses, or contact lenses, and then eventually implants!”

In a sense, the heart of the new series is the friendship of the three characters played by Jess Hong, John Bradley and Alex Sharp. As John Bradley (Sam Tarley from “Game of Thrones”) explains, the friendship wasn’t as natural and personal as it appears on screen.

“To be honest, it was a bit difficult because we were filming in London during a COVID lockdown,” he says, describing the situation. “So it wasn’t a particularly ‘social’ job, especially at the beginning, as I was used to in the past .”

He continues: “In a way, we were lucky that we were able to see each other at all, as there weren’t many opportunities for ‘real’ social interaction at the time.”

Of course, sometimes you have to force such bonds if things don’t click. But our line-up was doing pretty well.

His co-star Jess Hong points out that the people behind the camera and the casting team in particular put a lot of work into not casting “difficult” people: “They want to get to know you as a person. That’s how they can find out: ‘Hey, are you cool? Or not so cool?’ And luckily they usually hire cool people.”

Is VR the future of film and television?

I think we’re getting to a point where TV, movies, phone calls, ordering food, just walking down the street, everything will eventually become intertwined. At least that’s my gut feeling.

While Alex Sharp, known for “Glam Girls” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, is very sure that the advance of VR is “inevitable”, John Bradley is a little more critical about the future: “I think the most important thing “The symptom that makes us take refuge in this technology comes from a desire to run away from the real world.”

“At some point it becomes very seductive, causing people to disappear more and more from the real world,” says the actor. “It’s all very exciting! But we should be careful not to get too caught up in it, otherwise people will become even further apart more isolated than is already the case.”

“On the other hand, I think that at some point, if you don’t have an implant, you’ll be looked at in the same way as if you didn’t have a smartphone these days,” objects Alex Sharp. It could lead to the fear of being “expelled” at some point if one does not submit to digitalization.
