30 e-models – the ambitious goals of the Hyundai Group

Hyundai sold 346,000 electric cars worldwide last year. There will be significantly more in the future. The Koreans want to get to the top.

The Hyundai Motor Group wants to establish itself as one of the top 3 largest electric car manufacturers in the world by 2030. According to a strategic plan now presented as part of the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Kia plant, the Koreans will invest 18 billion US dollars in the domestic electric vehicle industry to increase production and exports and promote the EV-related industry range of brands Kia, Hyundai and Genesis will grow in the next seven years. In Korea, the annual production of e-cars is expected to increase to 1.5 million and worldwide to over 3.6 million units in the same period. New platforms are coming In order to achieve this goal, the group wants to accelerate the development of platforms, among other things. On the basis of the Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA), special platforms are to be developed for each vehicle class. The new electric platform “eM”, which is to be introduced in 2025, is intended exclusively for use in passenger cars. The platforms based on IMA go hand in hand with the standardization of batteries and motors, which makes product development faster and more efficient. From 2025, battery-powered special vehicles – also known as purpose-built vehicles or PBVs – are to be produced in the Kia plant currently under construction. These are van-like electric vehicles that are primarily used for mobility services such as on-demand taxi services. The production capacity will initially be 100,000 vehicles and later increase to 150,000 units per year. In the PBV market in particular, the Koreans want to become the global No. 1 by 2030. (SPX)
