The quake occurred shortly before 1 a.m. about 14 kilometers southwest of Pruntrut. The shock is likely to have been felt in large parts of Switzerland, writes the earthquake service. Smaller damage is possible in isolated cases in a quake of this strength near the epicenter.
The Jura canton police had no knowledge of damage during the night, according to the Keystone-SDA news agency. However, some people called the police after feeling the tremor. The epicenter of the quake was about 5.9 kilometers deep.
During the night, the SED received a number of reports that the earthquake had been felt. These included advertisements from locations well over 100 kilometers from the epicenter. According to the SED, the village closest to the earthquake focus was Damvant, in the west of the Ajoie, near the French border.
