  • FC Lugano defeated FC Luzern in the cup semi-final at home 4:3 on penalties. After 120 minutes it was 2:2.
  • Player of the match is Zan Celar, who scores twice and sinks the winning penalty.
  • Lucerne shows morale by equalizing twice with a minute to go.
  • In the cup final (May 15), Lugano meets St. Gallen, which defeats Yverdon.

In the end they still made it into the cup final, the Luganesi. Only in the penalty shoot-out, but that will no longer bother the Ticino. Two players shone there: First goalie Amir Saipi, who parried two attempts. And second, Zan Celar, who converted the decisive penalty. If the victory hadn’t worked out, the Lugano players would have had to be angry.

Celar, the Lucerne fright

Because Celar was once again in a goal mood against Lucerne. Already in the 4 duels of the championship he had scored 4 times. In a duel in the cup semi-final he netted twice:

  • 72 minutes: Kevin Rüegg is sent half-right on the journey and puts it back into the penalty area on the baseline. Lucerne defender Denis Simani wants to clarify, but only shoots Marius Müller, his own goalkeeper. The rebound lands right on Celar, who shoots in at the speed of thought. The deserved first lead for the home team.
  • 93 minutes: Martin Frydek plays the ball with his hand after Adrian Durrer receives the ball in the penalty area – the VAR shows referee Fedayi San the scene on the screen before there is a penalty. After a short delay, Celar confidently converts to 2:1.

In between, Lucerne’s Silvan Sidler had saved Lucerne in overtime. He was forgotten on the right flank and was able to score unchallenged (89′). Except for 2 chances from Frydek (77th) and Simani (78th) and a short pressure phase at the end of extra time, the Lucerne team could never get Lugano into trouble. The latter brought Lucerne the 2-2 equalizer through Asumah Abubakar and saved Central Switzerland in a penalty shoot-out (119th).

Lugano’s strong but unrewarded 1st half

The home team proved that the Luganesi’s victory was deserved with a strong first half. The two hanging attackers Olivier Custodio and Mattia Bottani were always dangerous. The former saw his attempts parried by Lucerne goalie Müller in the 6th and 10th minutes. Bottani failed to clear Frydek (19th) and shot Lugano supposedly in the lead (38th). The goal didn’t count because Celar had previously fouled Simani. As is well known, the Slovenian more than made up for this mistake later on.

FC St. Gallen, who defeated the Challenge league team Yverdon 2-0, are now waiting in the cup final on May 15th. In the previous 3 season duels there was one win and one draw. The 4th duel and thus the final dress rehearsal will take place in the championship on Sunday.
