Princess Alexia celebrated King’s Day in Emmen on April 27, 2024 with her parents and sisters, posing for selfies and giving interviews. An all-round successful day – actually. Because the behavior of the Dutch princess is now causing a stir.

There are unique scenes that took place in Emmen on Saturday, April 27, 2024: The whole city turned out for the 57th birthday of King Willem-Alexander, colored in orange, together with his wife Queen Máxima, 52, and their three daughters, the monarch traveled to the Dutch province of Drenthe last weekend to celebrate his special day.

Princess Alexia gives a cautious interview

And how he was celebrated! The royal family was cheered, especially Princess Amalia, 20, Princess Alexia, 18, and Princess Ariane, 17, who became the stars of the day and posed diligently for selfies with the party-loving royal fans. In between, however, there was also a somewhat official part: the royals stood together for an interview. In addition to Princess Amalia’s escape to Madrid, the conversation also discussed Princess Alexia’s future plans; she graduated from high school last year.

“I’m very lucky that I can travel a lot, get to know other cultures and do different things for a year. Work a little, travel a little. In such a sabbatical, every moment is special,” said Alexia when asked by the moderator about hers current situation. However, the 18-year-old did not want to reveal exactly which countries she was in and simply explained: “All countries were equally beautiful. Above all, lots of sun. Great.” And the princess didn’t reveal anything concrete about her future plans either and answered matter-of-factly: “I’ll let you know when I know.”

“Disinterested attitude” triggers criticism

Answers that are hotly debated on the Dutch TV show “Shownieuws” from “SBS6”. “It seemed as if she couldn’t get the words out properly,” says moderator Manuel Venderbos. Nobility expert Sandra Schuurhof, who was there in Emmen, partially agrees with him and explains: “Well, she got her words out, but you could tell she didn’t want to say much. It’s more like that.” According to Schuurhof, Princess Alexia tried to say as little as possible and still answer. “You would often see her looking at Máxima, looking for some help, and she would come to her aid.”

Her colleague Bart Ettekoven still cannot understand the princess’s behavior: “I think it’s a shame, because apart from these few press moments, we leave her alone, and then you can give something in such moments, right? She could have said: ‘I am traveled through Asia’, or ‘through South Africa’.” At least the royals knew in advance what questions they would be asked. The Belgian newspaper “Het Laatste Nieuws” sees it similarly and ran the headline a few hours after King’s Day: “Bad spectacle: Princess Alexia is criticized for her disinterested attitude on King’s Day.” Criticism that show expert Eline de Ruig doesn’t want to leave alone. “I can also imagine that it is difficult for her too and that she is perhaps afraid of criticism. It is easy to say the wrong thing,” she defends the young princess.

Queen Maxima

“They think she’s snooty.”

Alexia’s behavior is also the topic of the talk show “De Oranjezondag”. “There’s a lot going on around Alexia. People have an opinion about her because that’s how they see her and think: She’s arrogant, she’s lazy, she doesn’t feel like it. How do you see Alexia?” asks moderator Hélène Hendriks – and gets a clear answer. “Well, we saw her last night and at my house they immediately judged her. They think she’s snooty, she’s first class and that’s what the youth today call arrogant. Yes, yes, I think so “That she’s just very awkward and shy and hides it,” says opinion expert Angela de Jong. Ultimately, like many 18-year-olds, Alexia just wants to enjoy her new freedom before deciding to study or train.
