In this back-to-school event gamemods are multiplying around Starfield which enjoys – again for a Bethesda game – broad community support.

Due to a two-stage launch – with early access from September 1 and an official release on September 6 – Starfield took advantage of its first mods even before it was actually on sale.

Mods which are already taking care of reversing Bethesda’s mistakes with better inventory management for example, an adjustment of the FOV or support for DLSS.

11.5 GB of planets in high definition

Apart from this DLSS support, the graphics mods have been rather discreet until now with mainly retouches to round out the buttocks of Sarah’s character (true!) or to give a little more realism to the bullet holes.

In recent days, however, we have started to see more ambitious graphics mods emerge on the famous NexusMods platform. It was therefore a question of refining the rendering of all the planets: we are moving from so-called 4K textures to 8K models with significant artificial intelligence work to achieve finer, more detailed renderings.

Be careful, however, because such textures lead to a very clear increase in the size of the mod and this 8K Planets (NASA original opt.) represents a download – to be made via this link – of 11.5 GB!

4.5 GB of “ground” textures

Not as imposing, but above all with a more direct influence on the game, because we ultimately spend more time on the planets than observing them, the second “major” graphics mod published in recent days is the work of a certain Skurkbro.

This Skurkbro’s Retexture Project is considered still under construction by its creator, but therefore already represents a download – to be made using this link – of 4.5 GB. The objective is clear: to rethink Starfield with high definition textures retaining the spirit of the vanilla (base) version of the game.

Skurkbro specifies that “its” textures are in 4K. There will be nothing inferior as this would not represent a sufficient gain compared to the original textures. There is no question of going higher: Skurkbro believes that 8K versions would have too negative an impact on performance.

The installation procedure is simple and please let us know what you think of the result. In total, these two mods will occupy more than 15 GB of additional space: it’s not for nothing!

Starfield

  • Pure Bethesda…
  • Successful main story
  • Very well seen exploration

If you expect too much, you’re bound to be disappointed. No, Starfield is not a fun revolution and it will not be as significant as Red Dead Redemption 2, the fault of gameplay inaccuracies and questionable design choices. The impossibility of using any means of transport or the relative sluggishness of the combat are among the most notable.

Of course, the notion of “rapid travel” and, more generally, the management of space transport pose a real problem. Starfield is also not the most accomplished game on a strictly technical level with its dated graphics engine and its numerous small loading screens. Finally, it is the general ergonomics of a user interface coming out of a fairly twisted mind that we regret.

We regret it, certainly, but not to the point of spoiling the joys of exploration. Less dense, but also more accessible than that of No Man’s Sky, this makes you want to go ever further and it is difficult to take off from a planet without a “complete analyst”. The multiple factions and their missions also help to keep us from getting lost even though the content is truly phenomenal.

All this to say that the Bethesda recipe still works just as well, especially since it is renewed here by the space theme, enough to convince some hesitant players. Those who resist the Bethesda style will not revise their judgment. On the other hand, this Starfield is undoubtedly the best gateway to the American studio’s games. We’re going back!
