Almost three years after the storming of the US Capitol in Washington, the new speaker of the US House of Representatives wants to ensure that tens of thousands of hours of video material are made publicly available. The Trump supporter demands that America should form its own opinion.
The new speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has announced that he will release 40,000 hours of video surveillance footage from the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. “Today I am fulfilling my promise to the American people and making all records from January 6th available to all Americans,” the Republican said via X. “Truth and transparency are critical,” he emphasized.
Johnson, who supports former President Donald Trump running for president again in 2024, said the extensive security camera footage will be released online in several parts. With the move, Johnson is reportedly fulfilling a promise he made to the ultra-right in his group before the election for the top job. They repeatedly falsely claim that the violent attack was a peaceful demonstration.
“This decision will allow millions of Americans, defendants, nonprofits and the media to see for themselves what happened that day instead of relying on the interpretation of a few politicians,” Johnson said. In the pictures, faces can only be seen blurred in order to avoid possible “retaliatory measures”.
The material had already been examined by a congressional committee that was investigating the storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters in an attempt to prevent current President Joe Biden from winning the election. More than 1,200 people were arrested in connection with this, and Trump has to stand trial.
