Gabriel LaBelle

1st – The Fabelmans: 4.9/5

The new Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans, is an autobiographical film centered on the journey of the famous director as a child and (especially) teenager. The cast includes well-known actors like Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen and allows the promising Gabriel LaBelle to find his first leading role.

Particularly well received by critics, the feature film benefits from a dithyrambic press rating of 4.9/5, which makes it the best film of 2023, but also… One of the best for 25 years!

Nan Goldin

2nd – All the beauty and the bloodshed: 4.2/5

The second best film of the year according to the press is All the beauty and the spilled blood, a documentary dedicated to Nan Goldin, an artist, photographer and activist known in particular for her photographic series “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency”.

For years, she has fought against the Sackler family, responsible for the opiate crisis in the United States and around the world. The feature film by Laura Poitras (who received the Oscar for best documentary for Citizenfour in 2015) won the Golden Lion at Venice.

Rebecca Marder and Nadia Tereszkiewicz

3rd – My Crime: 4/5

Less than a year after Peter von Kant, François Ozon delivers his new film, the wacky comedy Mon Crime, carried by a solid cast made up of Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Rebecca Marder, Isabelle Huppert, Fabrice Luchini and André Dussollier.

The plot of the feature film is set in the 1930s in Paris. Madeleine Verdier, a young and pretty penniless and talentless actress, is accused of the murder of a famous producer. Helped by her best friend Pauline, a young unemployed lawyer, she is acquitted for self-defense.

Then begins a new life, made of glory and success, until the truth comes to light…

As often for the director’s films, Mon Crime was very well received by French critics, since its average is 4/5 (and this for 33 ratings) on AlloCiné. It is even the highest rated comedy since the beginning of 2023!

Alyona Mikhailova

4th tie – Tchaikovsky’s Wife: 3.9/5

Directed by Kirill Serebrennikov (who caused a stir with Leto in 2018), Tchaikovsky’s Wife is set in 19th century Russia. The story of this biographical drama follows Antonina Miliukova, a young piano apprentice who marries composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. But the love she has for him is not reciprocated and the young woman is violently rejected…

Long under house arrest in Russia, Kirill Serebrennikov had managed to flee the country to present Tchaikovsky’s Wife at the last Cannes Film Festival. Nine months later, the film is finally released in our theaters.

4th tied – Nayola: 3.9/5

In fourth position of the top, tied with The Woman of Tchaikovsky, we find the atypical cartoon (and equipped with a warning) Nayola. Directed by José Miguel Ribeiro, based on his play A Caixa Pretaits story centers on three women from the same family whose lives are turned upside down by the civil war that raged in Angola for more than 25 years.

Awarded Best Animated Film at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, Noyla is also an opportunity for French audiences to discover Angolan culture.

* For films released since February 15 inclusive, with at least 10 ratings on AlloCiné.
