After the tragic loss of Mathis Bellon, a young 8-year-old motorcycle champion, his parents decided to donate his organs. A courageous decision that saved five lives.
The decision was not easy to make. Less than a week after thetragic accident which cost the life of the young motorcycle champion Mathis Bellon, his parents Aurélie and Laurent Bellon had to make a choice that they would never have thought of making one day. They decided to donate their child’s organs, 8 years old. But before that, “we had to accept that he was dead”entrusts the mother to our colleagues from TF1. The little boy had been urgently repatriated to Toulouse hospital from Italy, brain dead, so the couple had two options. “Either we don’t donate and legally, since he’s dead, we have to unplug him and let him go. Or we send him to the operating room to donate all his organs. And we say goodbye to him in the room, still alive”they explained in front of the camera.
A courageous gesture, taken in pain, but which for them echoes what Mathis would have wanted. “He was a generous little boy, and I think that if we had talked to him about it before, he would surely have said yes. For us, as parents, it’s hard. But we are very proud of him.”declare the two moved parents.
A donation that saved five lives
Thanks to this organ donation, to Mathis and his parents, five people were saved. In France, in 2021, 5,273 organ transplants were performed thanks in particular to 1,392 deceased donors and 532 living donors. Compared to 2020, there is a visible increase of 19.3%, even if this remains insufficient given the number of patients registered on waiting lists. They would be around 24,000.

The death of Mathis Bellon was tragic. He lost his life on July 28, victim of a serious motorcycle accident a few days earlier, during a race in Italy on the Misano circuit.
For his parents, and the people around him, his future was almost mapped out. He was considered a two-wheeled prodigy and a hope for motorsport. “He had a truly extraordinary talent. And, on top of that, he was a very hard worker. This loss will be remembered for life”assured Thibaut Gourin, instructor at the Race Experience School, to TF1.
