Around 70 years ago, Audrey Hepburn made her breakthrough on the big screen – and on the fashion scene. Since then, the film legend has been considered THE style icon par excellence. We know why…

There are many style icons, but only a few of them have shaped our style for decades. Audrey Hepburn managed that with ease. She still stands for glamour, grace and has made a real statement more than once with her looks. So it’s no wonder that the Hollywood diva was already celebrated for her fashion sense during her lifetime and also serves as an inspiration for modern fashionistas. So we took a closer look at the actress’ style and uncovered five secrets to keep for now (and forever).

1. Less is more

Admittedly, this “styling rule” is not new, but it is all the more important. Audrey Hepburn is known for her timeless style, which she created primarily with classic fashion all-rounders. Her motto: Basics from the designer, the rest can also be off the shelf. So instead of hanging on to an unnecessarily large amount of chichi that lasts a maximum of one season, it is better to invest in high-quality classics that come with excellent quality, a simple but perfect cut and a minimum of details. Trench coats, turtleneck sweaters, sleeveless dresses and ballerinas were among the screen beauty’s all-time favourites.

2. Less is more – also with designer parts

A styling rule that follows on seamlessly from the first. When Audrey became famous, the most famous fashion houses queued up to dress the new star in the film sky. But even if Audrey appreciated and loved the noble designer pieces, she still used them sparingly. One highlight per look is enough! Combining the Chanel suit with the Hermès bag and Dior sunglasses was out of the question for Audrey! If you want too much, you’re more likely to achieve the opposite – Audrey knew that!

3. Emphasize assets

We all have places on our bodies that we can’t always get used to. Audrey Hepburn was no exception. It may sound inconceivable, but the Oscar winner did not correspond to the common beauty ideal of the dream factory at the time. Not as curvy as Marilyn Monroe, but also not as graceful as Grace Kelly and then also brunette: Audrey knew about her supposed “flaws” – and whistled! The actress did not allow herself to be bent and made her own brand out of her type by emphasizing her advantages. So she loved any look that she could combine with a wide waist belt. This perfectly staged her narrow middle and also conjured up a few great extra curves.

4. A girl’s best friend: the sunglasses

Audrey Hepburn has helped some parts to world fame. The legendary scene in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” remains unforgotten, in which the actress stands in a breathtaking dress in front of what is probably the most famous shop window in the world. It was the birth of the “little black dress” and thus to this day the epitome of elegance and the absolute must-have in EVERY wardrobe. But not only the simple cocktail dress was one of Audrey’s trademarks, the large black sunglasses also appeared in countless of her looks. The reason is as simple as it is ingenious: the accessory not only gave her style the perfect amount of coolness, it also served as a trendy means for the actress to hide no-makeup days or short nights with little sleep.

5. Be yourself

Almost 70 years after her big break with the film “A Heart and a Crown”, Audrey Hepburn is still celebrated as a style icon. But much more than her knack for fashion, the nature of the actress remains unforgotten. Always friendly and with a smile, but determined and self-confident, she did what she wanted and did not allow herself to be swayed or changed by the sometimes merciless dream factory. Her success has proved her right to this day. Be yourself and you can only win – especially when it comes to fashion and style!
