56 years later, this cult science fiction film from the 60s will have its remake with an actress from Euphoria

Starring in the horror film “Immaculate”, actress Sydney Sweeney – discovered thanks to “Euphoria” – will soon play Barbarella in a modern rereading of the cult film with Jane Fonda.

After Euphoria, Everything But You and Immaculate, American actress Sydney Sweeney will bring Barbarella back to life on screen. Released in 1968, the science fiction feature film by Roger Vadim led by Jane Fonda will indeed have a remake announced in 2022.

Inspired by the comic strip by Jean-Claude Forest, the feature film did not meet with the expected success in theaters but became cult when released on video. The film takes place in the year 4000, the astronaut Barbarella, then on vacation, is entrusted by the President of the Earth with a special mission. She must find Durand-Durand, a scientist who disappeared a few years ago, inventor of the absolute weapon, which he wants to sell to an enemy planet.

A remake in the works for a long time

This new version has been in the works for many years but has never come to fruition. Robert Rodriguez had considered a remake with Rose McGowan in the title role and Nicolas Winding Refn also had a series project 10 years ago. A sequel with Jane Fondatitled Barbarella Goes Downhad even been considered but never materialized.

It must be said that the first opus – presenting a very naked heroine – had, already upon its release, suffered numerous criticisms concerning the stereotypical representation of women that it conveyed and had even been qualified as a “bad pornographic film”.

Jane Fonda in Barbarella

Jane Fonda worried

Interviewed in January 2023 by the Hollywood Reporter on the remake project, Jane Fonda, who played the naked astronaut in 1968, declared about this remake: “I try not to think about it because I worry about what it’s going to be like.”

The actress added: “I had an idea for a sequel, but producer Dino De Laurentiis refused to listen to me. But it could have been a truly feminist film.” The actress, very committed, is indeed worried about the sexualization of Sydney Sweeney and the message that the film could convey.

“The film is still in progress. We are finishing the writing. I should actually shoot it directly after the third season of Euphoria. The actress will also produce the film through her production company Fifty-Fifty.

Concerning the concerns of her eldest, the 26-year-old actress declared to Variety last August: “I find power in my femininity. I use my brain, and I use what I learn every day in this industry as a strength. Knowledge is essential.

Sydney Sweeney added that she would “absolutely” like to talk to Jane Fonda about Barbarella and tell her that for her the 1968 film pushes “women to use their power.”

It is still unknown who will produce this new version, but new information should be revealed soon.
