- The 2030 World Cup will be played in 6 countries on 3 continents.
- Spain, Portugal and Morocco will host the majority of World Cup games.
- Three games will also be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
- The world association Fifa decided this on Wednesday.
The anniversary edition of the 2030 FIFA World Cup will take place in 6 countries. It starts in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, then Morocco, Spain and Portugal host the tournament with 48 nations. FIFA announced this on Wednesday after a council meeting in Zurich. This means that the World Cup will be held on three continents for the first time. All 6 teams qualified for the finals.
Starting game in Uruguay
The opening game will take place in Uruguay, followed by two more games in Argentina and Paraguay. With this, FIFA wants to honor the anniversary of the tournament. The first World Cup took place in Uruguay in 1930. The three South American countries originally wanted to hold the tournament in its entirety, which FIFA rejected.
The first of these three games will of course be played at the stadium where it all began, the mythical Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.
World Cup 2034 in Saudi Arabia?
FIFA’s announcement came as a surprise. The tournament was actually only supposed to be awarded in a year on the occasion of the 74th Fifa Congress. The 2026 World Cup (for the first time with 48 nations) will be played in the USA, Mexico and Canada. For the 2034 finals, FIFA only wants applications from Asia and Oceania.
Shortly after FIFA’s preliminary decision to award the 2030 World Cup, Saudi Arabia, which had withdrawn its candidacy for 2030, registered its interest in the tournament four years later. They want to organize a world-class tournament and be inspired by “Saudi Arabia’s ongoing social and economic transformation and the country’s deep-rooted passion for football,” it said in a statement.
