- 2022 was catastrophic for Swiss glaciers: With very little snow in winter and persistent heat waves in summer, all ice melt records were pulverized.
- More than six percent of the ice volume was lost, as the Academy of Sciences SCNAT writes in a statement.
The melting rates would far exceed the previous records from the hot summer of 2003: the glaciers lost around three cubic kilometers of ice in 2022, which is more than six percent of the remaining volume. As a comparison: Previously, years with two percent ice loss were described as “extreme”.
The loss for small glaciers was particularly drastic. The Pizol Glacier SG, the Vadret dal Corvatsch GR and the Schwarzbachfirn UR have practically disappeared – the measurements have been discontinued, as the SCNAT further reports.
Little to no snow
The amount of snow in the Alps in spring was as low as it has rarely been, especially in southern Switzerland. Overall, last winter brought very little snow, especially in the Mittelland and southern Switzerland. No snow was measured at all in Basel and Lucerne.
