6 tips from a naturopath to improve digestion and avoid bloating

Many people complain that their stomach is bloated. There are solutions to overcome these inconveniences. Advice from a naturopath.

Who has never felt bloated, like bloated after a meal? A swollen stomach can affect everyone, and can be a source of discomfort. It can also be disabling on a daily basis. When we feel that our stomach is swollen, it can cause more or less severe pain depending on the person. Where do these swellings come from? There are many possibilities. The first: you rely on the wrong foods, on food that does not suit you and that you have difficulty digesting. For example, many people have difficulty with cruciferous vegetables or raw fruits and vegetables. For others, dairy products are the problem. Whatever the cause, there are solutions to relieve you. 1/ Chew

“Chewing is an anti-swelling tool because it plays a key role in digestion,” explains Caroline Tancrède, naturopath in Paris in the 9th and creator of the Cétox center in Sologne. The more we chew, the easier the work of the digestive system is. “By chewing, we reduce the food bolus to a mush state, and we keep more of the food in the mouth, where enzymes begin to digest the starches.”

2/ Change the shape of food

Many people have bloated stomachs because they cannot tolerate raw fruits and vegetables. “You have two solutions: eat cooked food or change the shape of the food to make it more digestible.” How to do ? The naturopath suggests making juices. “Transforming the raw vegetable or fruit into juice allows you to retain the benefits of the food, such as its vitamin and antioxidant content, but by removing what makes digestion difficult: fiber.” These are broken when the food is squeezed or placed in the juicer to make juice.

3/ Chlorophyll

If a person suffers from gas that bloats their stomach, a chlorophyll treatment can be initiated. “It involves taking two capsules in the morning and two in the evening”specifies Caroline Tancrede. “Chlorophyll helps fight gas and cleanse the digestive area.”

4/ Study your diet

We are not all equal when it comes to digestion. To find out which foods cause us problems, the naturopath simply advises “to consciously observe after a meal if the stomach is swollen, and to list the foods that have been consumed.” After a few days, people are often able to identify at least one food that does not suit them. “Many people cannot tolerate cruciferous vegetables, for example. It is not a question of eliminating them completely, but once the problem is identified, you must chew well and prefer to consume cruciferous vegetables cooked or in juice.”

5/ Avoid drinking water during meals

Drinking water swells the stomach. “By drinking water during a meal, we increase the volume of the food bolus and dilute the digestive enzymes. Instead of being concentrated, they are scattered, which slows down digestion.” The solution ? “Refrain from drinking water during meals, not just before either, but at least an hour after.”

6/ Limit “inflammatory” foods

A swollen stomach can result from inflammation of the stomach, caused by fermentations due to an imbalance in the stomach flora. Another cause of swelling, intestinal porosity: “When we digest poorly, when we chew poorly, and when we consume foods that ferment too much or cause inflammation (food additives for example, fast sugars, etc.), the intestinal wall loses its tightness and can even become porous. Less waterproof, this lets toxins pass into the bloodstream which should not have been there”. Put on alert, the immune system will then produce a defense reaction, inflammation. Silent, this inflammation is nonetheless a source of multiple inconveniences.
Remember that inflammation is most often caused by foods such as cow’s milk products, fast sugars, gluten, red meats, etc.
