69 years old, 60 films, 2 Oscars: will this legendary actor soon return to the cinema?

Denzel Washington, one of the greatest Hollywood figures, has great projects up his sleeve as he approaches his 70th birthday. We take stock of the upcoming films that will feature the actor.

Denzel Washington, 69, is one of the most popular and acclaimed actors in cinema history. The artist has appeared in more than sixty films since his debut in the late 1970s.

The New York native has won 2 Academy Awards. The first was given to him in 1990 for his poignant performance in Glory by Edward Zwick. After this statuette for Best Supporting Role, Denzel received the supreme award in 2002, that of Best Actor, for his high-energy performance as a corrupt cop in Training Day, directed by Antoine Fuqua.

The latter became the favorite director of Denzel Washington, who then directed him in the Equalizer trilogy and The Mercenaries 7. Moreover, the two men will soon meet again in Hannibal, currently in pre-production.

Denzel’s projects

Denzel will play the famous Hannibal Barca, general of the armies of Carthage. The film’s screenplay is by John Logan, who wrote Gladiator and Skyfall. This ambitious work is produced by Netflix and will therefore be released on the streaming platform. For the moment, no release date has been announced.

On the other hand, another large-scale project with Denzel Washington will arrive in cinemas on November 20, 2024: Gladiator 2. Directed by Ridley Scott, this sequel to the cult epic with Russell Crowe will tell the story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen in Gladiator) and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).

Lucius greatly admires Maximus’ journey and should follow in his footsteps. He will be played by Paul Mescal, revealed in Aftersun and Normal People. It is not yet known what role Denzel Washington will play in Gladiator 2.

Spike is back!

Latest project in which the actor is involved: High and Low. It is a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s film Between Heaven and Hell. Denzel will meet another of his accomplices there, the director Spike Lee. Their association in the 90s gave birth to several cinematic masterpieces.

Together, Spike Lee and Denzel Washington made 4 classic films, including the biopic Malcolm X and the college basketball drama He Got Game. Denzel also starred in Mo’ Better Blues in 1990. Their last collaboration was in 2006 with the heist film Inside Man.

After 18 long years, their duo is preparing to reunite during the filming of this remake of Between Heaven and Hell by Kurosawa. This Japanese feature film, made in 1963, follows the story of a man employed in a shoe factory confronted with the kidnapping of his son. A series of twists and turns, however, will question the latter’s moral sense.
