In a test with the Fraunhofer Institute, LG succeeded in transmitting data using 6G terahertz technology. This is a big step towards commercialization.

With the test of 6G terahertz technology carried out in Berlin, LG wants nothing less than to underline its global leadership in the mobile sector. The focus was on improving the distance values, because in 2021 the Korean manufacturer will only be able to transfer 6G data over a distance of 100 meters.

This time a distance of more than 320 meters could be covered, outdoors. This exceeds current standards by far, which are around 250 meters. During the successful demonstration on September 7th at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, transmissions took place in a frequency range of 155 to 175 GHz.

A greater range is particularly important because fewer cellphone stations are required for the same amount of coverage. This saves costs. In order to achieve this, the Fraunhofer Institute and LG use, according to their own information, “a low-noise power amplifier that increases the transmission strength and, on the other hand, a receiving element that improves the quality of the incoming signal”.
LG’s 6G Grand Summit next week in the Korean homeland
LG plans to present the full presentation of the test results at a 6G Grand Summit in Seoul on Friday, September 23. By 2029, the manufacturer assumes that 6G will then become the new mobile communications standard. The industry-internal exchange on the realization of the new technology should continue until 2025.
