75% of the inks used are believed to be carcinogenic

UFC-Que Choisir is publishing a survey this week on the most used tattoo inks in France, and the results are alarming. The majority of these do not meet standards and even represent a high health risk.

Tattooing is more popular today than ever. It's pretty crazy by the way: most people sport one; be it large designs on the arms, or much finer and more discreet lines positioned at the wrist. In 2018, according to an Ifop poll published by the newspaper The cross, we already counted 1 in 5 French people who wore a tattoo. An act which attracts a lot, and which is however not without danger, as the last survey of theUFC-Que Choisir.

"A high health risk"

In its latest issue dated February 18, 2020, the UFC-Que Choisir reveals alarming results regarding the tattoo ink quality which we use in France and the most sold on the Internet with French tattoo artists. Experts commissioned by the association combed 20 of the most widely used tattoo inks in the country; and only 5 of them would truly meet the standards. According to UFC-Que Choisir, the other inks tested would represent "a high health risk (…) for human beings", since they would contain many chemicals for the majority carcinogens.

Following these worrying results, the UFC-Que Choisir seized the General Directorate for Competition, Consumption and the Repression of Fraud, as well as the National Medicines Safety Agency to request the recall and withdrawal of these products.
