77 years old, 41 films, 3 Oscars: this legendary director returns to science fiction!

Steven Spielberg is currently working on his next feature film: a science fiction film with aliens. The legendary director therefore returns to his first love.

Two years after The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg returns to his first love. Variety has just announced that the legendary director is currently working on a new film about UFOs based on an original idea. The filmmaker is co-writing the screenplay with his accomplice from Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, David Koepp.

We still don’t know anything about this mysterious project, but Spielberg’s return to directing a science fiction feature film with aliens after the cult films Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET the Extra-Terrestrial and War of the Worlds is excellent news.

These three films were a great success at the box office and had a profound impact on the history of science fiction cinema. Steven Spielberg has played a major role in this genre, not only with his alien films, but also with works such as Minority Report, AI Artificial Intelligence and more recently Ready Player One.

Spielberg’s projects

Winner of 3 Oscars (best film and best direction for Schindler’s List in 1994 and best direction for Saving Private Ryan in 1999), Steven Spielberg is currently working on several projects as a producer.

He will notably collaborate with Martin Scorsese as executive producer of an Apple TV+ television series based on Scorsese’s 1991 film, Nerves. The filmmaker is also producing a 7-episode series on Napoleon based on the unfinished work of Stanley Kubrick.

He is also executive producer of the new film Twisters by Lee Isaac Chung, Jurassic World 4 directed by Gareth Edwards and the remake of Bullitt by Josh Singer with Bradley Cooper.

The alien film should be his next production since the projects It’s What I Do and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara have apparently been abandoned by the filmmaker who has not discussed these films since their announcement in 2015 and 2016.
