8000 meter high ash cloud – Sicily: Etna volcano erupted – News

  • On Thursday evening, Mount Etna spat out lava fountains and three streams of glowing rock flowed hundreds of meters down the mountain.
  • Already on Friday morning no more lava came out.
  • There have been several eruptions in recent years, but the damage has been limited.

The largest active volcano in Europe erupted again on Thursday. A column of smoke of around 8000 meters rose from Etna into the sky, as announced by the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

According to the information, no more lava came out of the volcano on the Mediterranean island on Friday morning. However, the ash cloud continues to flow out of the crater. Operations at Catania airport at the foot of Mount Etna were not disrupted.

Multiple outbreaks

The volcano has erupted several times in the past year. The ash in particular caused trouble and minor damage in the surrounding villages and towns. Air traffic at Catania Airport also had to be interrupted again and again.
