89 missions – violent storms demanded 256 Floriani from Salzburg

Heavy thunderstorms passed over Salzburg on Tuesday evening and left a trail of devastation, especially in Flachgau. 256 Floriani from 10 fire brigades were busy for hours pumping out basements, clearing streets and paths and looking for missing people at Wallersee.

Flooded streets, hailstones the size of a fist, fallen trees: heavy thunderstorms fell across the state on Tuesday. “10 fire brigades with 256 men were involved in 89 operations,” the state fire brigade association said at 9:30 p.m.

The Flachgau was hit particularly hard: in the evening between Hallwang and Bergheim, a tree uprooted by a thunderstorm fell on the overhead line of the Westbahn. The driver of the train, which was on the way from Vienna to Salzburg, had to apply an emergency brake. In Seekirchen, an underpass was completely under water and it was no longer possible to get through in the late evening hours. There was also a power cut in several Flachgau communities.

Several fallen trees also blocked the train route between Salzburg Central Station and Seekirchen. The Floriani around the Wallersee were busy looking for missing people. The missions lasted late into the night in many communities.
