Benoît Poelvoorde is back at the cinema this Wednesday, starring in Normale, the new film by Olivier Babinet (Swagger, Poissonsexe).

After the series En place on Netflix, or Colors of the fire of Clovis Cornillac, last fall, the actor carries this film of author, with the young actress Justine Lacroix, and invites us to discover it in a role quite different in his filmography. From there to speak of counter-employment? Not quite ! “It’s a mule role“, throws tit for tat Benoît Poelvoorde. It is a more dramatic register that gives us to see the actor, a role of “downgraded“as he puts it.

Justine Lacroix and Benoît Poelvoorde in Normale

This film, inspired by the play The Monster in the Hallway by David Greig, follows Lucie, 15, a teenager with an overflowing imagination. She lives alone with William, her father, who looks like a retarded teenager and is fighting multiple sclerosis. Between college, a small job and the burden of everyday life, Lucie somehow manages, and escapes into the writing of a whimsical autobiographical novel, which navigates between dream and reality… The announcement of the visit of a social worker will upset this precarious balance. Lucie and her father will have to redouble their inventiveness to give the illusion of a normal life…

We caught up with the comedian for a long podcast interview. An interview in his image, free, spontaneous and in which he first tells us about the reasons why he let himself be tempted by this new auteur film, far from certain big productions in which he was able to shine in the past.

The subject of these French “blockbuster” films is also mentioned on our microphone, right in the news, between an Asterix and the arrival of the Three Musketeers. Then comes the moment to talk about a cult film which has just celebrated its 30th anniversary, the first film by Benoît Poelvoorde, the essential It happened near you. “I don’t know if it would still pass now“, he thinks of our microphone, agreeing to comment on this generational film which we always talk about a lot. To close this interview, it will be a question of friendships, a word which suits his choices well, and which crosses filmography, up to Gilles Lellouche with whom he is about to shoot again soon, after Narco and Le Grand Bain, for L’Amour ouf.
