During his eight-year term from 2005 to 2013, Ahmadinejad was first the darling of the ruling Shiite clergy, as well as the hardliners and conservatives in parliament. Towards the end of his term of office, however, more and more doubts about his policy arose. His course in nuclear policy led to numerous sanctions against the country and, consequently, to an economic crisis.
Because of its military threats against Israel and denial of the Holocaust, Iran was isolated internationally. His supporters turned more and more away from him, even among the hardliners he was controversial at the end of his term in office.
