The HBO series “House of Dragons” is currently being broadcast on free TV on ProSieben and is running free on Joyn. Something stood out: the dragon emblems of House Targaryen sometimes have two and sometimes four legs. How can that be?
In the series world of “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones,” the dragons actually only have two legs
All previously known dragons in Westeros only ever had two legs. The dragon on the well-known Targaryen coat of arms also has two legs. But in videos and images from “House of the Dragon” you can see flags with four-legged dragon creatures as coats of arms.
However, this four-legged dragon has not only been around since the spin-off; Daenerys Targaryen hoisted a flag with this coat of arms for the first time in “Game of Thrones”.
Until now, four-legged dragon seals have been spotted whenever Daenerys has gone to war. There is also war in the new HBO series. The four-legged dragon could be a sign that House Targaryen is currently not in peace.
Even though Daenerys also fought against others before, these battles were no comparison to a real war. These were liberation campaigns in which the mother of dragons was always far superior to her opponents.
Their attacks on Astapor, Yunkai, and Meereen were much more comparable to targeted assassinations or terrorist attacks. Daenerys only waged an equal war when she set off for Westeros and officially fought for rule on the Iron Throne.
Ryan Condal, the co-writer of “House of the Dragon”, said in an interview with the US magazine “Entertainment Weekly” that they used the seal very consciously in their show.
We made every decision in this show, down to the smallest detail (crests), for a reason. […] Even though we thought we’d seen the Targaryen crest a lot, that’s not entirely true. We only saw it on merchandise. […] It only came back with Daenerys. So we decided to take a path that honors Daenerys where she had to leave us. But everyone will believe that it all began there. But stay tuned. Hopefully this will all make sense in due time.
Ryan Condal to Entertainment Weekly
The four-legged dragon is above all a homage to Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons.
