fun, news, tips… what else?

An SVT teacher had illustrated her course on evolution with a photo of Soprano, a racist choice according to a parent.

In a college in Trappes, a professor of SVT used a photo of Soprano in her course, and it was this choice that would have set fire to the powder, revealed The Parisian. To interest her students, on December 8, 2020, the teacher offered them a course where she used a photo of the Marseille rapper to represent the evolution of man until today. A deliberate choice of the young woman who had taken into account the criticisms of her students in a previous establishment. They criticized the SVT manuals for only offering white representations.

The father of one of his students will relay only part of this lesson on social networks, implying that given the juxtaposition of the photos, the teacher would have made a racist allusion by assimilating “the man with a monkey”. If, after a confrontation between the two, the student’s father deleted the widely shared Facebook post, the young woman still wanted to file a complaint.

Support of justice, less of National Education

After being transferred to another region, the SVT teacher finally won her case. The student’s parent was tried on November 15, 2021 and sentenced to six months in prison, a decision he appealed.

During the trial, however, the National Education did not become a civil party and no representative was present. A lack of support that undermined the young woman’s vision of the profession: “I no longer trust the institution. There are sensitive subjects in SVT such as reproduction, puberty or evolution. If National Education does not protect its teachers, I will have to censor myself.”
