The day: The student speaks Turkish during a break – and is sentenced to prison work

A third grader in the Black Forest-Baar district near Freiburg is said to have spoken Turkish to a friend during a school break – and was punished for doing so. The incident is now an issue for school supervision, as a spokeswoman for the Freiburg regional council confirmed. The girl's parents have hired a lawyer. According to the lawyer, the teacher had stated for the half-way sentence: "Why we speak German at school!"

The Federation of Turkish Parents' Advisory Councils in Baden was concerned: "It cannot be that schoolchildren are punished for speaking to each other in the mother tongue of Turkey outside the classroom," said chairman Kemal Ülker. According to the school supervisory authority, the school has not yet given a final opinion.
