“Moon Knight” throws Marvel fans into the deep end, more than any previous Disney+ MCU series. New characters, Egyptian gods, but no references to other heroes and events from Marvel’s long history.

Of course, “Moon Knight” doesn’t stand completely on its own two feet either, because the mercenary Marc Spector, chosen by the Egyptian god Khonshu, has been known in the world of comics for a long time. The same applies to his numerous alter egos and opponents.

Already in the first scene of the first episode we get to know Arthur Harrow, the villain of the first “Moon Knight” season, who puts broken glass in his shoes – a form of self-flagellation. But what do the comics tell us about this powerful and enigmatic figure?

Arthur Harrow in the comics

In fact, Arthur Harrow, known from the “Moon Knight” comics, has hardly anything to do with the character embodied by Ethan Hawke. Harrow is a scientist in the comics who suffers from trigeminal neuralgia and is paralyzed on the left side of his face.

His research is to be awarded the Nobel Prize, until the scientist Dr. Victoria Grail finds out that Harrow is secretly continuing experiments from the Auschwitz concentration camp with which he wants to cure his illness. Together with Moon Knight, Dr. Grail to put a stop to Harrow.

Arthur Harrow in the series “Moon Knight”

In “Moon Knight” Arthur Harrow is a cult leader and the avatar of the Egyptian goddess Ammit. Unlike Moon Knight, who also avenges injustice in the service of Khonshu, Arthur Harrow thinks he can also recognize future injustice in a person’s life and uses Ammit’s power to kill everyone who, in his opinion, needs to be punished.

Unlike Marc Spector and Steven Grant, who must serve Khonshu, Harrow believes strongly in Ammit and has managed to convince his followers as well. As a character who barely featured in the comics and was completely reinvented for the series, Arthur Harrow’s chances of a return in any other series or film are slim.

The great and enduring foes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have always been well-known from the comics as major antagonists, so it can be assumed that the Harrow story arc will be completed at the end of the first (and supposedly only) “Moon Knight” season.

However, since “Moon Knight” is mainly an origin story intended to introduce Marc Spector, Steven Grant, Khonshu and Moon Knight, Harrow as an antagonist is primarily a means to an end. More interesting is the question of who else Moon Knight will face in the future.

A new episode of Moon Knight will be released every Wednesday through May 4, 2022 on Disney+. After that, the excitement continues: “Obi-Wan Kenobi” will finally start on May 25th and just two weeks later, on June 8th, the next Marvel series will follow with “Ms. Marvel”.
