After more than 30 years in the music business, Mary J. Blige is thinking about her departure. But first she wants to advance her film career.

After over 30 years in the music business and nine Grammys: Mary J. Blige (53) is thinking out loud about ending her career. “In five or six years I will definitely retire,” the singer told “Extra TV”. But until then she wants to advance her film career first, as she told the US portal.

She made it clear that she wants to say goodbye to music soon. But: “At the moment I’m still doing what I do, but not as often as I used to because I don’t have to do it anymore.” Her last album to date, “Good Morning Gorgeous,” was released in 2022. She received five of her 38 Grammy nominations for the LP and the title song.

Queen of Hip-Hop-Soul in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

In 1992, Mary J. Blige debuted with the album “What’s the 411”. This record and its successor “My Life” (1994) are considered to be the initial spark for the influential connection between hip-hop and R&B. As a result, the singer was hailed as the “Queen of Hip-Hop-Soul.” Blige will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, it was just announced.

Since 2001, Mary J. Blige has also been trying her hand at acting – with increasing success. In 2016, she appeared in the third season of How to Get Away with Murder. In the first season of “The Umbrella Academy” she played the killer Cha-Cha.

Mary J. Blige was even nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in the historical film “Mudbound”. She also received a Best Song nomination for the song “Mighty River” for the same film. She is the first and only person to be nominated for an Oscar in both an acting category and songwriter in the same year.
