Barbarians: That's what Netflix's first German historical drama is about

What does the first German historical Netflix Original series promise? In "Barbarians" blood is guaranteed to be shed from October 23rd.

On October 23, the first German historical drama will be launched on Netflix with the original series "Barbaren". The six-part production takes place in the year 9 AD and illuminates the famous Varus Battle in the Teutoburg Forest, when several Germanic tribes united to challenge the Roman legions. The German-French Jeanne Goursaud (24), the Austrian Laurence Rupp (33) and the German actor David Schütter (29) play the leading roles.

As former childhood friends, you are at the center of the battle that will become a defining event in European history. Prince's daughter Thusnelda (Goursaud) and Krieger Folkwin (Schütter) have a secret relationship. When the Roman occupiers extort crushing tributes from the Germanic tribes, they act together. But the Roman Empire does not stand idly by. Governor Varus sends his foster son (Rupp), who, however, keeps a secret that connects him closely with Thusnelda and Folkwin. Which side will the Roman officer choose?

New perspective on history

The "Club der rote Bänder" authors Jan Martin Scharf (46) and Arne Nolting (47) are responsible as showrunners for "Barbaren". To make the series as authentic as possible, the two worked closely with historians, explains Rachel Eggebeen, Director of the German Original Series in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. "We know the Roman perspective because it has been handed down from the writings of the Romans, but not from the Germanic side," she says. "Barbarians" would now offer this new perspective.
