Super League: GC misses league lead – 1:3 against Servette

Although the Genevans give the Grasshoppers a goal, they still get a well-deserved home win. Servette catches up with leader YB.

The Grasshoppers didn’t start the game well enough against Servette either.

A few centimeters separate GC from the virtual championship lead on Saturday evening. Fifteen minutes before the end, striker Giotto Morandi hit the post from a few meters, it would have been the lead in Geneva against Servette. Shortly thereafter, Miroslav Stevanovic scored the deserved 2-1 for the hosts on the other side. They may not be as powerful and superior after the break as they were in the first half, but they are still the better team.

The Grasshoppers are no longer able to react, especially since the again unlucky defender Noah Loosli is sent off with the second warning in the final phase. Boubacar Fofana manages to make it 3-1 in injury time – and so GC loses for the first time in the sixth game of the season and misses the leap to first place, while Servette catches up with leader YB.

Again the Grasshoppers started poorly in a match. They seemed unfocused, made mistakes, and didn’t make a confident impression. Especially in midfield, without the injured Amir Abrashi and Tsiy Ndenge, the team lacked toughness, resistance and stability. But the ball rolled again for GC for the time being. The conspicuous Patrick Pluck and the brilliant Stevanovic convinced in the Servette offensive, but in the end the Genevans sinned badly.

Servette central defender Yoan Severin hit the goal precisely a few minutes later. But into his own, when he surprised his goalie Jérémy Frick with a hard back pass. With this slapstick scene, Severin applied without restriction for the “Own Goal of the Year”. The Grasshoppers, who were harmless for a long time, almost made it 2-0 through Petar Pusic before Servette launched one attack after the other with a lot of drive and enthusiasm – and a header from Alexis Antunes just before the break made it 1-1 scored

With a bit more determination and class in the end, Servette could have decided the match in the first half. After the sale of Kastriot Imeri for around 3.5 million francs to YB, the Geneva squad should be strengthened in the next few days.

For example, the commitment of the striker Enzo Crivelli from Basaksehir is imminent according to “L’Équipe”. The 27-year-old was once a junior international for France and is likely to increase the risk of scoring.
