In 2023, is it finally possible that mid-range phones will also be equipped with high-quality screens?
It is in any case the bet of POCOa brand very well known for its excellent quality vs price ratio, which will soon launch a mid-range smartphone, but with high-end characteristics, in particular its screen: the POCO X5 PRO 5G. The latter will indeed be equipped with a Flow AMOLED screen quite different from conventional OLED screens.
What is Flow AMOLED?
The basic principle of Flow AMOLED is similar to that of conventional OLED. The panel is made up of millions of organic light-emitting diodes, which emit light when energized.
The biggest difference between AMOLED Flow displays and conventional OLED displays is the material used as the substrate. Unlike the classic OLED screen, the AMOLED Flow screen uses a special flexible substrate which allows it to obtain improved characteristics. A high-end screen on a mid-range smartphone, so this is the first surprise of POCO.

Although OLED screens are the number one choice for smartphone screens due to their display advantages, many users with sensitive eyes may still prefer LCD screens. Indeed, OLED screens can experience low frequency flickering issues with a possible impact on eye health. This is why the screen of the POCO X5 PRO 5G is equipped with reduction technology PWM 1920Hz high frequency to improve the screen’s eye protection function.
With its AMOLED screen with a high refresh rate of 120 Hz and a color depth of 10 bits, you will be guaranteed a quality and fluid image, including in video games or streaming. The 10-bit display, which can show up to 1.07 billion colors, is also very nice. Compared to conventional 8-bit displays, the screen displays more accurate colors and the transition between different colors is more natural.
PWM dimming
The great novelty of this screen comes from the integration of a dimming PWM high frequency 1920 Hz, which is a world first.
Graduation PWM is a technology used for OLED screens. It adjusts the brightness of the screen by making the screen flicker with a certain frequency in a very short time. By changing the time span between “on” and “off”, it is possible to reduce or increase the brightness of the screen from 0 to 100%.
However, this technology can cause vision problems if misused, with low frequency (DC dimming) for example, which can cause uneven color and brightness between pixels, reducing display quality. THE POCO X5 Pro 5G uses a gradation technique PWM at a high frequency of 1920 Hz, which is considered to be the optimal method currently, if not the ultimate. It solves flickering and eye strain problems, while avoiding display problems related to DC dimming. POCO is therefore strong by integrating a high-end AMOLED screen in a smartphone with a mid-range price.
The cost of POCO X5 Pro 5G is not yet officially communicated. However, the firm announces a rather controlled and attractive price compared to its competitors in the same range with similar technical characteristics. The final price is supposed to be around US$400 which is more than reasonable, especially knowing that some mobiles sell for values exceeding a thousand euros. The next official press conference to formalize the launch of the POCO X5 Pro 5G will be held on February 6 at 8:00 a.m. Beijing time.
